Want to go sailing? Don't have a boat? No problem mate! Lots of sailors are looking for crew.
One of the biggest challenges for sailors who own sailboats and racing yachts is finding enough crew to consistently manage their boat through all the weekends of commitments to regattas and events on the water. If you have an interest in sailing, try taking a lesson or two to see if it's really as you imagine. A couple of places where you might take lessons are listed here:
It won't cost you much but you will gain enough confidence and experience to know if you'd like to offer yourself as crew. Naturally, you won't be assigned to the most exciting of tasks at first, but there are jobs onboard that do not require extensive experience. You will have the opportunity to meet some great people, get out on the water, and learn a new skill that will be with you forever. And, you won't have the expense and occasional headache of being a boat owner. Generally, the boat owner will provide lunch and refreshments onboard, so all you'll have to cover is your cost to travel to the boat; sometimes that will be covered as well.
The opportunities very often present themselves in the Northeast early in the Spring season. On Long Island Sound, the first regattas begin in April and run through October, with a few even later. There are crew opportunities throughout the season as people move with their jobs or develop conflicts that keep them from sailing. The regattas are typically held in beautiful harbors with hosting sailing clubs and yacht clubs that provide the sailors with plenty of opportunities to mingle in the after-race festivities. In fact, it's a singles paradise as more and more women enter the scene, evening up the score with the number of men making up the crews on deck!
So muster up the courage and sign up for crew. The worst that will happen is that you'll decide it's not for you. At least you will have tried something new, right? What's to lose? E-mail us a message today and we'll post it here and send it on to our friends in the sailing community.
