Applications Invited for Career Boosting Scholarship Grant

Could you be eligible for a share of the £30,000 fund?

The RYA is once again welcoming applications for the Trinity House RYA Yachtmaster™ Scholarship, an exciting opportunity for those working, or aspiring to work in the small commercial vessel sector.

Skilled boaters who can prove their dedication to the marine industry could be eligible for a share of the annual £30,000 scholarship fund provided by Maritime charity, Trinity House, but hurry applications close on Monday 02 March 2020.

Since its launch in 2018, the scholarship has seen grants awarded to 12 deserving individuals, aiding career progression through opportunities for further training.

Seeing the impact

19-year-old Bosun, Louis Day, currently works for an RYA recognised training centre on the Solent and says he wouldn’t be where he is today without the funding he received through the scholarship.

In the year since receiving the grant, Louis has achieved his RYA Powerboat Advanced Certificate of Competence and completed the RYA Yachtmaster™ Offshore theory and RYA Coastal Skipper Sail courses. He plans to complete the STCW basic safety training and is also studying for a Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Marine Engineering.

Louis commented: “Not only has the scholarship increased my value to my employer, its opened more doors for me and has also grown my love for my work as I find myself in more and more interesting positions and situations. I’m looking forward to exploring the opportunities available to me within the industry and all over the world.”

Marine Biologist turned technician, Sarah Reed also benefited from a scholarship grant.  Currently working as the Ship’s Operation Manager for the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), Sarah’s career has seen her work all over the world, conducting scientific research in both the Arctic and Antarctic.

With the funding, Sarah has completed the RYA Radar and RYA Professional Practices and Responsibilities courses. She’s also gained her RYA Powerboat Advanced Certificate of Competence and has aspirations to build her experience and qualify as an RYA Yachtmaster™ Offshore in the future.

She says: “It’s good to remember that within the world of working on the water, there are lots of different paths you can take – it’s not just the military or superyachts!

“There’s everything from commercial skippering on wildlife survey boats, to working on fish farms, dive boats and many more. The industry is growing in so many different sectors and if you love working outside, within dynamic teams and testing your skills in all sorts of weather conditions, then this is definitely a great career-building scholarship.”

Richard Falk, RYA Director of Training and Qualifications, said: “We are delighted to be working with Trinity House once again to invest in future talent and give back to the industry.  It takes a huge amount of dedication and training to reach the top and it’s very encouraging to see the impact the grants are already having.”

It could be you

The next round of applications for the Trinity House RYA Yachtmaster™ Scholarship close on Monday 02 March 2020.  To apply, candidates must be able to demonstrate a high level of commitment and achievement in the industry, as well as a clear intention to work within the small commercial vessel sector.  Those keen to enter the industry will be able to show a history of excellence in studies, or in leisure boating activity.

Applications should be supported by an endorsement from the principal of one of the RYA’s vast network of RYA recognised training centres, where candidates will have shown exceptional boating, navigation and/or leadership skills.  Principals can also nominate suitable candidates.
