Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) – Deployment in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford

Marine Notice No. 09 of 2019
Notice to all Shipowners, Fishing Vessel Owners, Agents, Shipmasters, Skippers, Fishers, Yachtsmen and Seafarers

The ADP frames to be deployed on the seabed (image clearly showing the ADCP seabed frame with ADCP and Recovery Buoy inside the frame).

The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport has been advised that TechWorks Marine Ltd are planning on deploying 4 Trawl-resistant bottom mounted Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) frames in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford at locations provided below and also shown on the accompanying Admiralty Chart (please refer to Appendix A).

TechWorks Marine Ltd intend to deploy the ADCPs on the next neap tide between the 22nd and 26th April 2019 depending on the weather. If the deployment is delayed due to the weather, the deployment will be carried out on the next viable tide and weather window.

The frames will be on the seafloor for a minimum period of one calendar month and a maximum period of two months (weather permitting). The ADCPs will be measuring currents through the water column at each location over the deployment. This data will be used to validate a Hydrodynamic model of the area being developed for Irish Water.

The deployment locations are (degrees, minutes, seconds) WGS84 as follows:

Frames ID

Latitude

Longitude

ADCP 1

52°04'45.4"N

7°34'03.0"W

ADCP 2

52°03'51.6"N

7°32'55.1"W

ADCP 3

52°04'55.2"N

7°32'08.3"W

ADCP 4

52°03'47.1"N

7°31'39.8"W

Each Frame will have the following equipment:

1 x ADCP Sensor (Waves and Currents)

     1 x Acoustic Release

     1 x Rigid Recovery Buoy

     1 x Acoustic Pinger

     1 x Grapple line

The frames are approx. 1m x 1m and will remain on the seafloor for a period of up to 30 days after which the frame will be retrieved by the acoustic release by the retrieval team of a pop-up buoy allowing for its recovery or by a grapple line recovery method. There will be no surface marker during the extent of deployment so vessel traffic will not need to avoid the area but should be aware of its presence.
