Breathtaking, Hand-drawn Maps Represent Moments When Our Ever-Changing World Is Frozen in Time

Coastal Art Maps, a New York-based map-making company, has expanded its exquisite collection of hand-drawn maps spotlighting the East Coast's most beautiful beaches, from Florida to New England. Coastal Art Maps now offers more than three dozen different maps, spanning the Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, South Carolina and Florida coastlines, including the Florida Keys. Five spectacular South Carolina maps are the latest additions to the collection.

The new South Carolina maps highlight the historic towns, coastal attractions, islands and waterways that span the state’s 180 miles of shoreline. This collection includes Hilton Head, with its Atlantic Ocean beaches, quaint Harbour Town Lighthouse, military bases, and coastal Lowcountry. Charleston’s historic beauty is also featured, with notable locations such as Battery Promenade, Waterfront Park, Charleston Harbor, and Fort Sumter, where the first shots of the Civil War rang out. Another South Carolina map portrays the stunning, tranquil settings steeped in history along the shore: classic plantations, white sandy beaches, rolling dunes, beautiful parks such as Francis Marion National Forest, and gorgeous marinas, capturing the untamed wilderness of Bulls Island, with its Wildlife Refuge and areas of uninhabited beauty.

One of the new South Carolina maps is a stunning historical piece that serves as a companion to the 2016 map covering the same area, Charleston to Edisto Island. This historical depiction showcases the area around the late part of the 19th Century, representing the area in a simpler, more bucolic time. This historic representation illustrates the changing Lowcountry landforms over the past 100+ years. It focuses on historic Charleston with its iconic surrounding forts, harbor and outposts, as well as more rural areas with stately plantation houses and houses of worship.

“It’s truly a joy to capture the beauty of the Eastern shoreline. My maps capture moments when our ever-changing world is frozen in time, which is especially poignant in areas that have recently been damaged by natural disasters – such as the Florida Keys, which were just hit by Hurricane Irma, and the New Jersey shoreline that was ravaged by Super Storm Sandy several years ago,” explained artist Joseph S. Tarella, Owner of Coastal Art Maps.

“The maps I’ve created showcase the splendor and diversity of our Eastern shoreline, from bustling cities to beautiful beaches, idyllic harbor towns, sparkling marinas, and the natural beauty of wildlife preserves. My collection now spans much of the East Coast, from the bucolic New England islands, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket - famous for their beaches, lighthouses, cobblestone streets and gray-shingled cottages - to the iconic Florida Keys - with the broad varieties of land forms and vast natural wonders - plus much of the picturesque shoreline in between,” Tarella continued.

The newly expanded collection of hand-drawn maps also includes rich, robust images of New York's Shelter Island, Fire Island and Montauk, showcasing the pristine beaches, parklands, marinas and quaint towns, New Jersey's entire beachfront coastline including Long Beach Island, Atlantic City and Cape May resort areas and Delaware's Rehoboth and Bethany beaches, depicting the lush scenery from the seashore to nature preserves.  Additionally, Tarella has created a breathtaking collection of maps around the Chesapeake Bay area, where people spend idyllic days boating, crabbing, enjoying the beaches, and visiting the lovely Victorian towns along the bay.

Artist Joseph S. Tarella, Owner of Coastal Art Maps, creates stunning artwork using the time-honored tools of pen-and-ink and watercolor washes. The tactile quality that Tarella achieves by using ink and watercolors on vellum allows for a kind of expression not easily achieved using more modern, mechanical methods.

These maps, singly or as a group, make ideal, unique gifts or collectibles for art aficionados, beach lovers, historians, avid sportsmen, casual naturalists, and anyone that has ever enjoyed the beauty of these seaside locales. Coastal Art Maps make gorgeous additions to any home, boat or office decors, and are memorable, treasured acquisitions for family, friends, colleagues or clients.

“Coastal Art Maps started as a hobby. I like maps and traveling, and when I built a house on Long Beach Island, I couldn’t find any maps of the area that I liked, so I created my own,” Tarella explained. “When my friends and neighbors saw the map I’d created, they loved it and wanted their own versions.  The labor-of-love company evolved from there."

Tarella offers a series of limited-edition art maps of selected coastlines. Each map presents an elegant, detailed and accurate rendering of selections of East Coast land areas, highlighting the juxtaposition and relationships between land and water, islands, parks, roadways, and other significant elements. These comprehensive and beautiful ink-and-watercolor compositions, offered on full size giclee canvas or half-size watercolor paper, make a truly unique and satisfying acquisition.

Tarella combines his architectural experience, passion for travel and love of map-making to create stunning maps of East Coast beaches. Coastal Art Maps currently has over three dozen different maps in circulation, depicting areas including the Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, South Carolina, and Florida coastlines.  Tarella, a trained architect and owner of SawickiTarella Architecture+Design PC, also customizes maps, identifying specific locations, per customer request.
